"How long should our explainer video be?" is one of the first questions every SaaS team asks. The honest answer: it depends on where the video lives and what it needs to do. A homepage explainer, a product demo and a paid social ad all have different jobs, so they need different lengths.
The short answer
- Homepage or landing page explainer: 60 to 90 seconds.
- Product demo or UI walkthrough: 2 to 3 minutes.
- Onboarding and feature videos: 30 to 90 seconds per feature.
- SaaS video ads on social media: 15 to 30 seconds.
Why 60 to 90 seconds works for a homepage explainer
A homepage visitor wants to know three things fast: what the product is, who it is for and why it is better. Sixty to ninety seconds is enough to show the problem, the solution and a call to action without losing attention. Most people prefer a short video to learn about a product, so a tight explainer usually beats a long one.
When a longer video makes sense
Product demos and walkthroughs are watched by people who are already interested. They want detail, so 2 to 3 minutes of clear UI animation is fine, as long as every scene shows something useful. Break very long demos into short feature videos instead of one long one.
SaaS explainer video ads: keep them short
On LinkedIn, YouTube and Meta, your explainer is competing with the feed. Cut your main explainer into 15 to 30 second ads that focus on one feature or one pain point, with a hook in the first 3 seconds and a clear call to action. Make vertical 9:16 versions for Reels and Shorts.
A simple rule for your script
A natural voice-over runs at around 140 to 150 words per minute. So:
- 30 seconds ≈ 70 to 75 words
- 60 seconds ≈ 140 to 150 words
- 90 seconds ≈ 210 to 225 words
If your script is longer, cut features, not pacing. A rushed voice-over and crowded motion graphics make a video feel longer, not shorter.
How to keep any length engaging
- Start with the problem, not your logo.
- Storyboard before animation so every scene has one job.
- Show the product with clean UI animation instead of describing it.
- End with one call to action: start a trial, book a demo or sign up.
