The script is the foundation of every SaaS explainer video. Great animation cannot save a confusing message, but a clear script makes every scene easier to design. Here is a simple structure and a template you can use.
The 5-part explainer structure
- Hook (5 to 10 seconds): name the problem your viewer feels.
- Problem (10 to 15 seconds): show why the current way is painful or slow.
- Solution (10 seconds): introduce your product as the better way.
- How it works (25 to 40 seconds): 2 to 3 key benefits, each with one scene.
- Call to action (5 to 10 seconds): one clear next step.
How many words do you need?
A natural voice-over is about 140 to 150 words per minute:
- 30 seconds: about 70 to 75 words
- 60 seconds: about 140 to 150 words
- 90 seconds: about 210 to 225 words
Fill-in template
Hook: "Tired of [problem]?"
Problem: "Most [audience] waste [time or money] because [reason]."
Solution: "Meet [product], the [category] that [main benefit]."
How it works: "With [product], you can [benefit 1], [benefit 2] and [benefit 3]."
Call to action: "[Start your free trial / Book a demo] at [website]."
Tips for a stronger script
- Write for the ear. Short sentences, everyday words, no jargon.
- Lead with benefits. Explain what users get, not how the code works.
- Read it aloud and time it. If it feels rushed, cut words.
- Think visually. Every line should suggest a picture or a UI moment.
From script to storyboard
Once the script is approved, split it into scenes and sketch a visual storyboard: one frame per idea, with notes on UI animation, on-screen text and transitions. This is where you catch confusing moments before animation starts, which saves the most time and money.
