SaaS teams often use "demo video" and "explainer video" as if they are the same thing. They are not. They do different jobs at different stages of the buyer journey, and knowing which one you need saves time and budget.
What is an explainer video?
An explainer video answers why: what problem you solve, who it is for and why your product is the better way. It is short (usually 60 to 90 seconds), story-led and often uses motion graphics and simplified UI animation.
What is a product demo video?
A product demo answers how: how the product works, step by step. It is longer (often 2 to 3 minutes or split into feature videos) and shows the real interface in detail.
Key differences
- Goal: explainer = interest and sign-ups; demo = understanding and confidence to buy.
- Audience: explainer = new visitors; demo = people already considering you.
- Length: explainer 60 to 90 seconds; demo 2 to 3+ minutes.
- Style: explainer = story and motion graphics; demo = screen-focused UI walkthrough.
Where each one fits
- Homepage and ads: explainer video, plus 15 to 30 second cut-downs for LinkedIn, YouTube and Meta.
- Pricing and product pages: demo video.
- Sales calls and onboarding: demo and short feature videos.
Which should you make first?
If people do not understand what you do, start with an explainer. If they understand it but hesitate to buy or struggle to start, make a demo. Many teams make the explainer first and reuse its style and UI animations for later demo and feature videos.
