The first 3 seconds of a video ad decide whether anyone sees the rest. On Reels and TikTok, a strong hook rate (the share of viewers who watch past 3 seconds) is commonly above 30%, and top ads reach 40% or more. The fastest way to improve an ad is often to change only the hook. Here are ten hook styles to test.
1. The bold claim
Open with a big, specific promise in kinetic typography: "Charge your phone to 50% before your coffee is ready."
2. The direct question
"Still editing your videos at 2 a.m.?" A question that names the viewer's problem makes them answer it in their head.
3. The offer first
For sales and launches, lead with the deal: "37% off every course, this week only." Do not hide the reason to watch.
4. The pattern break
An unexpected visual, a fast zoom or a product flying into frame interrupts the scroll rhythm.
5. Before and after
Show the messy "before" and the clean "after" in the first second. Great for tools, services and transformations.
6. The mistake hook
"You are losing customers with this one mistake." People stop to check if it applies to them.
7. The product in action
Skip the intro and show the product working immediately: the app solving the task, the gadget doing its job.
8. The relatable moment
A familiar situation, like a cluttered inbox or a dead battery, builds instant connection.
9. The number
"3 reasons your ads are not converting." Numbers set a clear expectation and promise a quick payoff.
10. The talking head opener
A real person looking into the camera and speaking straight to the viewer builds trust fast, especially for services.
How to test hooks
- Keep the body of the ad the same.
- Create 3 to 5 different first 3-second openings.
- Run them side by side and compare hook rate and click-through rate.
- Keep the winner, then test new hooks against it.
Make hooks work on mute
On Meta, many people watch without sound. Put the hook on screen as text, use motion to draw the eye and keep the first frame interesting even before it moves.
